Second only to Lewis is size, Skye boasts the most rugged group of mountains in all the British Isles- the Cuillin. This compact massif has attracted the attention of mountaineers for well over a century. Its sharp peaks, narrow ridges and ice- scoured carries are fashioned out of rough bare gabbro- one of the finest of all rocks for scrambling and climbing on.
This guide is concerned mainly with scrambling routes in the Cuillin, though a selection of walks and lower grade climbs are included. The Cuillin main ridge, which is fully described, offers the longest, and most continuously absorbing, scramble in the country and there are also all sorts of interesting outings in the flanking carries and on adjoining ridges. Indeed, the Cuillin can be regarded as a scrambler's paradise. The walks described from elsewhere on the island have also been chosen to give a taste of the many delights to be found there.
