This red sandstone castle is situated on a rock outcrop high above the River Wye. Rock has been quarried from the moat below to provide some of the building stone for the castle. At first glance it may seem as if the whole castle is built of red sandstone. However, as you walk around the trail you will see the variations in types and colours of the sandstones used.
Following the trail , in this laminated booklet, and you will discover how sandstone is formed and how it changes when weathered.
